Cabinet Door & Drawer Size Calculator

Enter the cabinet opening and overlay, and get finished door or drawer-front sizes for single or double doors, plus the drawer box width.

Drawer fronts use the same overlay math, enter them as 1-door openings. For a pair of doors the center gap is split, so each door loses half the gap. Confirm overlay matches your hinge.

Cabinet Door & Drawer Size Calculator, explained

How do you calculate cabinet door size from the opening?

For full overlay doors, the door is larger than the opening: add the overlay to each side, so door width = opening width + (2 x overlay) and door height = opening height + (2 x overlay). A common overlay is 1/2 inch. For a pair of doors on one opening, subtract the center gap (often 1/8 inch) and split the total in two.

For inset doors, the door sits inside the opening with a reveal, or gap, on every side, so door width = opening width - (2 x reveal) and height = opening height - (2 x reveal). A typical inset reveal is 1/8 inch. Drawer fronts follow the same overlay or inset math, while the drawer box is sized to the opening minus the slide clearance, usually about 1 inch total for standard side-mount slides.

How it works

How the Cabinet Door & Drawer Size Calculator works.

Formula Full overlay: Door = Opening + (2 x overlay) | Inset: Door = Opening - (2 x reveal)
  1. Enter the cabinet opening width and height in inches. Fractions like 14 1/2 are fine.
  2. Choose the construction: full overlay (the door covers the opening) or inset (the door sits flush inside it).
  3. Set the overlay per side for full overlay, or the reveal per side for inset.
  4. Choose one or two doors on the opening, and set the center gap for a pair.
  5. Read the finished door or drawer-front size, plus the drawer box width from the slide clearance.

Example: a 30 inch wide by 24 inch high opening with two full-overlay doors at 1/2 inch overlay and a 1/8 inch center gap gives two doors, each 15 7/16 inch wide by 25 inch high.

Cabinet Door & Drawer Size Calculator FAQ

Cabinet Door & Drawer Size Calculatorquestions.

  • How big should a cabinet door be?

For full overlay, add the overlay to each side of the opening. With a 1/2 inch overlay, a door on a 12 by 24 inch opening is 13 inches wide by 25 inches high. For inset, subtract the reveal from each side instead.

  • What is the difference between full overlay and inset?

Full overlay doors sit on top of the cabinet face and cover the opening, so they are larger than the opening. Inset doors sit flush inside the opening with a small reveal around them, so they are smaller than the opening.

  • How do you size a drawer box?

Take the opening width and subtract the total slide clearance, which is about 1 inch for standard 1/2 inch side-mount slides (1/2 inch per side). Box height and depth depend on the drawer and cabinet, so confirm against your slide spec.

  • What is a standard cabinet door overlay?

1/2 inch is the most common full overlay, though 3/8 inch and 1/4 inch overlays are also used. Inset doors typically use a 1/8 inch reveal. Always match the hinge the door is built for.
