Fraction to Decimal Calculator, explained
How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?
To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. For example 3/4 is 3 divided by 4, which is 0.75. For a mixed number like 1 1/2, convert the fraction part (1 divided by 2 is 0.5) and add the whole number to get 1.5. To go the other way, multiply the decimal by your denominator and round to the nearest whole number over that denominator, so 0.4 inch is roughly 7/16 at 1/16 precision.
Cabinet shops switch between fractions and decimals constantly: tape measures read in fractions, while CNC machines, 2020 Flex, and spreadsheets work in decimals. To convert inches to millimeters, multiply by 25.4. This converter accepts a fraction, a decimal inch, or a millimeter value and returns all three, rounding the fraction to 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64 as you choose.
How it works
How the Fraction to Decimal Calculator works.
Decimal = Numerator ÷ Denominator | Millimeters = Inches × 25.4 - Pick what you are starting from: a fraction, a decimal inch, or millimeters.
- Type the value. Fractions accept mixed numbers like 2 3/8.
- Choose the rounding precision for the fraction result: 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64.
- Read the decimal inch, nearest fraction, and millimeter equivalents instantly.
Example: enter 0.625 inch and the converter returns 5/8 inch and 15.875 mm. Enter 19 mm and it returns 0.748 inch and 3/4 at 1/16 precision.

Fraction to Decimal Calculatorquestions.
-
What is 3/4 as a decimal?
3/4 as a decimal is 0.75, found by dividing 3 by 4. In millimeters that is 19.05 mm (0.75 × 25.4).
-
How do I convert inches to millimeters?

-
How do I turn a decimal into the nearest fraction?
Multiply the decimal by the denominator you want (16, 32, or 64), round to the nearest whole number, and place it over that denominator, then reduce. For example 0.3 inch at 1/16 precision is 0.3 × 16 = 4.8, rounded to 5, giving 5/16.

Why do cabinet makers convert between fractions and decimals?
Tape measures and shop drawings use fractions, while CNC machines, 2020 Flex, and spreadsheets use decimals. Converting cleanly between the two avoids stacking rounding errors across a run of parts.
