Linear Feet Calculator
Enter a piece length and how many you need to get total linear feet, and add a price per foot for the material cost. Handles feet or inches.
Pieces to buy assumes each run can be cut from one stock length. Long walls that exceed a single stick, or many short offcuts, may need a few more pieces.
Linear Feet Calculator, explained
How do you calculate linear feet?
Linear feet measure length only, so total linear feet is just the length of each piece times how many pieces you have, expressed in feet. If your length is in inches, divide by 12 first. For example eight pieces of trim at 8 feet each is 8 x 8 = 64 linear feet, and twelve pieces at 30 inches each is 12 x 30 / 12 = 30 linear feet.
Trim, molding, edge banding, and countertop edges are all priced by the linear foot, so multiply total linear feet by the price per foot to get the material cost. This calculator does both, and shows the total in feet and inches so you can cross-check against a cut list. Linear feet are not the same as board feet, which also account for thickness and width.
How it works
How the Linear Feet Calculator works.
Total linear feet = (piece length in feet) x quantity | Cost = total linear feet x price per foot - Enter the length of one piece and choose feet or inches.
- Enter how many pieces you need.
- Add a price per linear foot to get the material cost (optional).
- Read the total linear feet and cost.
Example: 12 pieces of crown at 8 feet each is 96 linear feet. At $3.25 per foot that is $312 in material.
Linear Feet Calculator FAQ
Linear Feet Calculatorquestions.
-
What is a linear foot?
A linear foot is simply one foot of length, measured in a straight line, regardless of width or thickness. Trim and molding are sold this way.
-
How is linear feet different from square feet?
Linear feet measure length only. Square feet measure area, which is length times width. Use linear feet for trim and molding, and square feet for sheet goods, countertops, and panels.
-
How do I convert inches to linear feet?
Divide the total inches by 12. For example 90 inches is 90 / 12 = 7.5 linear feet.
